Yip Pin Xiu Strikes Gold Again: A Historic Three-Peat at the Paris Paralympics

Singaporean swimmer Yip Pin Xiu has once again made history by clinching her sixth Paralympic gold medal in the women's 100m backstroke S2 event at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. This victory on August 30 marks her third consecutive gold in this event, having previously secured the title in the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.

Competing at the La Defense Arena in Paris, Yip clocked an impressive time of 2 minutes and 21.73 seconds, narrowly defeating Mexico's Haidee Aceves by just 0.06 seconds, who took silver. Italy's Angela Procida earned the bronze with a time of 2 minutes and 24.48 seconds.

Yip's triumph is particularly noteworthy as it continues her dominance in the 100m backstroke S2 category, a discipline where she still holds the world record of 2:07.09 set in Rio 2016. Her latest victory solidifies her status as one of the most decorated Paralympians in Singapore’s history and a true inspiration to athletes worldwide.

Reflecting on her win, Yip expressed immense pride and gratitude, highlighting the hard work and determination it took to maintain her position at the top of her sport. She is set to compete next in the 50m backstroke S2 event on August 31, where she will aim to add yet another gold to her remarkable collection.

Yip’s achievements have not only brought pride to Singapore but have also shed light on the excellence and resilience of para-athletes globally, inspiring the next generation to pursue their dreams regardless of the challenges they may face.
